Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

Standards for Better Health

All Trusts are required to submit a self assessment declaration against 24 core standards and the Standards for Better Health Framework, as prescribed by the Healthcare Commission. Below is the Trust's declaration against the Annual Health Check Core Standards that has been submitted to the Healthcare Commission for the reporting year 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2008.

The Trust is committed to providing information to all sections of the population and has subsequently invested in Language Line translation services. This provides frontline staff with the mechanism to communicate to patients and carers in any language.

A set of booklets has been distributed to all frontline staff to use (where practicable) in an emergency or urgent care situation to ascertain which language is required for patients. Telephone interpreters are then contacted to enable a patient responsive service; this is also to assist carers.

Translations of key information leaflets are also available, for example patient information leaflets translated into Polish, Portuguese, etc. Click here to view the current selection.

The Trust has also secured text to speech, braille and audio tape translations of various publications in response to the differing requirements of 'hard to reach' groups.

If you would like to find out more, or know of somebody who may wish to use these services, please contact the Trust's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01392 261585 or publicrelations@swast.nhs.uk.
