Equality & Diversity Strategy - (Single Equality Scheme equivalent)
The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust has developed an Equalities and Diversity Strategy (Single Equality Scheme) that meets its legal obligations under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and the Equality Act 2006 and pays due regard to the requirements as laid down in the Race Equality Duty, the Disability Equality Duty and the Gender Equality duty. The Equality and Diversity Strategy (Single Equality Scheme equivalent) is currently under review and in line with consistency of national documentation will be relabelled the Single Equality Scheme. The Trust set high importance in carrying out our individual statutory duties in respect of Race, Disability and Gender and will be given equal respect and consideration.
Training for Staff with Disabilities
Learning Disability Group
In order to support compliance with the ‘reasonable adjustment’ requirement within the Disability Discrimination act (2005) and SENDA (2001) a Task Group has been set up to look at this. After consultation with staff a report was presented to the Directors Group in August 2008 identifying key considerations to take into account to assist this particular group.
Following this report a pilot Assessment has been carried out, with the support of Plymouth University, on a staff member with reported learning difficulties to determined the viability of using this resource for our staff in general.
Learning Support
The Training Department has also implemented the following ‘support mechanisms’ for staff attending course at the Training Colleges:
- Introduction and Induction pack to learning practice
- The use of coloured Perspex to change the background of paper documents
- Use of Coloured Paper
- Change font to Arial size 12 (minimum), left justified and double spaced (SENDA, 2001)
- A Disability Statement that is sent to all learners per-course (See Appendix Four)
- A statement at the beginning of each course to ensure that Trainers make reasonable adjustments to provide the required support to learners, as appropriate to their needs.
- All Trainers have been provided with a copy of OU Dyslexia Toolkit
- PC Access will be made available if required
- Use of Flipchart – alternatives are to be considered
- Pre Course Learning material will be provided at least two weeks before the courses
Also the Colleges will consider those items listed in Appendix Three for inclusion
Equality Impact Assessment
An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is a thorough way to make sure that the Trust’s activities, documents and services do not discriminate and where possible promotes equal opportunities.
It is about making sure we treat everyone as an individual and we achieve the best for them whether they are a patient, carer, member of staff or member of the community.
Carrying out an EIA encourages us to recognise that people are different and to look at your plans from different perspectives.
Consultation
The task group is made up of an array of both internal and external members, including those with disability.
All policies, procedures and board papers are screened for equality and human rights.
